Fairy Rings and Prehistoric Stone Circles

Do animals or other creatures use symbols? Maybe. The electric can opener draws all the neighbors’ cats, horses seem to count and my dog used to go joyfully berserk when I picked up the keys. (He loved to ride in the car.) But this response is classic conditioning. I’m pretty sure the calico next door isn’t thinking “Humm… Feeling a bit peckish, wish I heard an electric can opener.” The fact that I am typing these 26 different glyphs to talk about the neighbor’s cat indicates an extremely advanced system of communicating abstract ideas. These words are merely symbols. Anyone trying to read a foreign language knows it’s all chicken scratch without the symbol key. But I didn’t invent it and teach it to you so you could understand; I am utilizing knowledge passed to me from my ancient ancestors. I’m pretty sure my dog didn’t pass the “jingling keys = car ride” on to his buddies. F.Y.I. NEWS = North, East, West and South.

Art is subjective. That means we each see whatever we want to see regardless of what the actual Artist intended. Artists are supremely brave to send their creations off into the world to be poked and prodded by inquisitive, judging eyes.  While not exactly fair to the original Artist’s intentions it is this very ambiguous nature of Art that makes it accessible to everyone. Art becomes whatever the individual sees in the creation.

>>>> Symbolism is abstract.  One thing stands for another. It doesn’t become it, just holds the schema. Myths and legends are all about remembering and transferring information.  We aren’t supposed to believe they’re true, just understand the universals they represent. Mythology is like a ginormous ancient hard drive. I know what my human ancestors discovered about human nature, because they told me themselves through the symbolic language of mythology.

The Marasmius Oreades

My neighbor across the way has a Fairy Ring in his side yard. The circular pattern of the Marasmius Oreades is created when the mushrooms are left to grow unhindered. (Like the round, moldy fuzz that forms on a forgotten orange.) The rings reoccur each year, and their diameter slowly increases. A ring can start when a single mushroom drops its spores around itself. Subsequent generations grow only outwards, because the parent colonies have depleted the nitrogen levels. ‘Some of the oldest living mushroom colonies are fairy rings growing around the famous Stonehenge ruins in England. The rings are so large that they can best be seen from airplanes.’ (Source: www.fungi.com)

I can see the neighbor’s Fairy ring from my second floor window. I was taken by the thought that from this height and distance it could be an ancient stone ring, like those scattered all over the British landscape. Very little is known about the prehistoric builders of these mysterious constructions. Every centuries-old community has its own nearby ruins and local legends surrounding their creation. The sheer number of these stone rings was not realized until the advent of flight.  The first aviators, who soared high above the rocky landscape, were astounded by these Bronze Age (aid date) standing stones and elaborate earthworks, some partially obliterated by 4 thousand years of continual plowing. The vast dimensions of some prehistoric stone circles can only be appreciated from high in the air or, maybe, gazing down from a distant hill top?

Symbolism in the British Landscape

Include a short bio with an interesting fact about the person.

Above the figure are the remains of the Iron Age Hill Fort – Uffington Castle, a bronze-Age monument. The nearby Dragon Hill, suggests some sort of Iron Age ritual site associated with the nearby hill-figure, which proclaims to be the actual spot where Saint George Slew the Dragon. (myth.) Although referred to as a Horse… With those fangs, reptilian tail and suggested crouching posture, upon the back legs, I can only see a dragon.

“Dragon?” You say Mary? Dinosaur bones were not identified as an extinct, terrestrial species until 1664. Before then, all gigantic fossil bones were attributed to giants or those mythical, reptilian creatures called dragons. Dragon bones were discovered as early as 3000 BC in China. In fact, Dragons have a 5,000 year longer written and oral history than dinosaurs.
